Commissioned by Michael Barkett, Now is a short work for solo piccolo trumpet written as part of my project to take on “mini-commissions” for unaccompanied works during the spring and summer of 2020. 

As the title suggests, Now is an exploration of the moment, unbounded by meter or rhythm. The piece juxtaposes two portrayals of timelessness, the ephemeral and the ongoing, in its alternating rapid grace-note passages and articulated, pointillistic statements of a musical cryptogram of the dedicatee’s name.
